Dawson was born on May 9, 1979, in New York to Isabel Celeste who was a singer. Her biological father was never part of the picture. Instead, Rosario was raised from birth by Greg Dawson, her stepfather who was a construction worker. Her unique ethnicity is a vibrant mix of Puerto Rican, Afro-Cuban, Native-American, and Irish.

At the age of 15, Dawson was discovered by director Larry Clark who cast her in his movie, Kids. Though the film was controversial, Dawson’s performance was a standout, and it opened doors for her in Hollywood.
