Mendes was born on March 5, 1974, in a lower-middle-class family of Cuban descent in Miami, Florida. At the age of 10, her mother and father divorced, forcing her to move to Los Angeles with her mother and siblings.

Growing up, Mendes wanted to be a nun but later changed her mind when a Hollywood agent saw her beautiful photos. At the time, Mendes was studying marketing at California State University, but she decided to drop out to pursue an acting career.
