Diaz was born in San Diego, California on August 30, 1972, to a Cuban-American father and American-Italian mother. When she was 16 years old, Diaz began her modeling career which took her to Australia, Japan, Paris, Morocco, and other destinations. She was featured in popular magazines such as Seventeen and Mademoiselle, as well as advertising campaigns for big companies like Coca Cola, Levi’s, and Calvin Klein.

In 1994, Diaz landed her first significant role in the blockbuster action-comedy film ‘The Mask’ alongside comic Jim Carrey. She played the female lead role, and even though she had no previous acting experience at all, she performed exceptionally well, earning her the title of the next big thing in Hollywood.

Prominent filmmakers all over Hollywood wanted to work with her in their projects. Diaz made a string of small, independent films such as Feeling Minnesota, The Last Supper, She’s The One, and Head Above Water.
